If you are new to the world of piercing, diction can be overwhelming. It might seem that choosing body jewelry is as simple as choosing the style you like, but you also need to consider health and comfort.
Your choice of jewelry will depend on the piercing you received and your anatomy. After purchasing a few pieces of jewelry, you will discover your preferred styles and find that buying body jewelry will be easy.
Until then, we’ve put together a guide for flat-backed pins to give you a better idea of whether it’s a style for you. Here’s what you need to know.
What are flat back nails?
Flat-back studs, also called labret studs or flat back labret, consist of a post, a spell at one end, and a flat back that is screwed into a jewelry fastening post.
The only difference between flat back pins and cartilage pins is that cartilage pins usually have a ball washer.
When should you wear flat-backed pins?
Flat-back studs are ideal when you need to fit.
Flat-back studs are essential for lip piercings (so they are often referred to as labret studs). Your jewelry must adjust to your lips to avoid rubbing against your teeth and gums, which could lead to mouth problems.
In piercings that require more elegant jewelry styles, such as a tragus piercing, the back of the flat disc allows for a discreet pad. If you are the one who wants your jewelry to shine only on the front of your ear, then a flat disc is for you.
Internal vs. Flat rear pins with external thread
In any threaded piercing (jewelry that is screwed together), you will come across the terms “inner thread” and “outer thread”. The difference between them may seem arbitrary at first glance, but in reality, it is quite important.

Internal threading is when a thread appears on the inside of the post and on the outside of the washer. External threading is when threading occurs on the outside of the post and on the inside of the washer.

Jewelry with an internal thread is usually more expensive, but of better quality than jewelry with an external thread. This is because it is harder to make an internal thread, but the internal thread is safer for your piercing because the thread will not scratch at the hole as it is with external thread pieces.
Once your piercing heals completely, you can opt for jewelry with an external thread. However, during healing, you must choose jewelry with an internal thread. It is also important to keep in mind that jewelry with an external thread can also damage a healed piercing, so we always recommend body jewelry with an internal thread.
If you want the jewelry to fit perfectly in your body, then you need a pad with a flat disc. Don’t forget to take a look at all our flat disc jewelry and find your next body jewelry.
How to insert earrings
To insert the earrings into the piercing, simply unscrew the back. Then insert the post from the front like any regular stud earring.
Then hold the flat back in place behind your ear and turn the front adjustment while keeping the flat back still.
The back should “stick” to your finger so that it can be easily held in place. If you have trouble holding your back, a piece of double-sided tape on your fingertip will help. (You can also try wearing medical rubber gloves to grasp the back while turning the earring forward.)
Remember that once you put the earrings on, you can leave them for days, weeks, months, or even years! Sleep easily and shower in your earrings. Just be sure to check for tightness once a day.

Troubleshooting
If you have trouble inserting earrings, the problem is probably at the blunt end of the post. Instead of stabbing in your ear like traditional earrings, they can put a little twist on them. If you have been flat back piercings for some time, you may need to use a regular earring (due to its needle-like protrusion) to open the hole back. If you do this, keep in mind that your ears may ache for several hours. This will disappear and you won’t soon remember wearing earrings.
Another tip for people with a very tight or new piercing is to insert the earrings right after the hot shower. This helps because heat and humidity make the earlobe tissue more flexible. Warm and damp cloth attached to the earlobe before insertion
I can also do my earrings.
Finally, if the hot shower or cloth does not work, use a water-based medical lubricant to make it easier to insert the pin into the piercing.
