So I want to make this clear beforehand I’m going to give you tips on how to fix 90 to 95 percent of streaming issues the majority of problems in streaming comes from an overload on your CPU and GPU.
But outside of that scope, there are going to be outlined problems like maybe your CPU is overheating because your thermal paste is going bad or maybe one of your pieces is just wearing out there are 1000000 things that can go wrong.
But the majority of the stream like issues can be fixed by what I’m about to tell you I spent some time and I’ve gone through the settings and I found multiple settings that just by tweaking a little bit you’re able to bring your CPU usage down to 20 percent of what you’re currently using.
So let’s talk about your like history before we discuss a fix we need to figure out if your lackey stream is caused by one of 2 things either your internet not having speed or your computer not having enough power.
The best way to figure out which one of these it is is by looking at your OBS window at the same time that you’re looking at your actual live stream if your OBS window showing you a clean smooth stream but your twitch actualized broadcast is good to you it’s going to be your internet.

Then you know it’s your computer being overpowered so first let’s talk about the 3 settings you can change to fix your problem if it is a band with a problem with your internet the very first thing I would do in this situation is change your output resolution to 720 P. 1080 P. has a total number of pixels of about 2000000.
If you’re running at 60 frames per second that means your internet is sending 2000000 pixels 60 times every single second or as you crank that down to 720 P. which frankly half of your viewers are watching on their phone they’re not really going to be able to tell a staggering difference.
You’re dropping the total number of pixels from over 2000000 down to less than 1000000 that’s a massive difference in the amount of information that your computer has to send through the internet however this brings us to the second set in the change that is your video bit rate.
You’re going to find this in the output settings yes video bit rate so much information your computer is sending every single second and as you can imagine 720 P. requires about half the amount of debt rate to maintain the same level of quality.
Because you have half the pixels I figured you probably figured that out but in case you didn’t that’s what’s so well 1080 P. and 60 frames percent will probably look great around 5 megabits you can drop it down to 720 P.
I would maintain a little bit of extra head room maybe bring it down to 3000 or 30 500 kilobits per second without any extra compression added or integrity lost in your footage.
If you’re still having internet issues at that point maybe I don’t know you’re running Comcast dropping down to 72030 frames per second lower your bit rate down to about 2000 or 20 500.
If you can’t get an upload speed better than that switch internet providers to move I don’t care what you have to do that’s bad but refresher course those are the 3 settings that I would change if you’re having problems with your internet.
That first drop to 720 P. drops the video bit rate down to about 30 500 if you’re still having issues trump the frames per second on the 30 and then drop the bit rate down to 20 500 with a wee bit rate works keeping the resolution high.
While lowering that rate you’re gonna see a lot of weird pixelation is going on when there’s heavy movement on the screen lowering the resolution of the stream will actually maintain higher integrity of footage by the way all these tips I’ve mentioned will also help you if the problem isn’t your internet.
But it’s also your computer if you were pixels your computer has to push through the internet the easier it is on the components but let’s get into computer CPU overload and what might be causing your computer to not be able to handle this.
There are 2 things that I would recommend you do first before lowering the quality of your street, okay this is doing something pretty fantastic in real-time it’s doing something that’s really heavy on its lotus called render.
Essentially what it’s doing is you’re taking these multiple layers whether it’s your gameplay than your camera and your overlay and your alerts and then your stream labels all the things that are layered on top of each other to make a stream.
It is taking all those elements and re writing a brand new video with all those things come up that process of creating all those layers and flattening into 1 singular video is called render if you have ever done any video editing for example in final cut pro you’ve had to deal with this.
If you’ve ever added a filter like color correction or maybe added a text layer on top you know the final cut has to render otherwise you lose the quality of your footage and that rendering you know powerful computers can take some time for your computer to do this.
Real-time is difficult and the 2 best things you can do to lighten that load or remove any filters that you might have that are unnecessary like maybe a color correction or consolidating multiple layers into a single layer if you have something like Mike C.
or stream up you’ve got an overlay layer maybe even 2 if you’ve got an overlay and underlay underneath your camera you’ve got labels showing the most recent follower and donator it Cetera alert boxes using your browser’s.
Source all these causing extra layers that your computer has rendered stream elements has an amazing solution you can go on another website you go to their over creator you can upload your overlays you can’t import alert boxes you can do everything in this browser to create your entire stream.
Then it gives you one link for a single browser source I’ve created entire scenes instream elements that were like 20 layers and consolidate some down to one layer which really lightens the load on your PC those are the first 2 things.
I would do because you’re not lowering the quality of your stream at all so now you’ve eliminated 10 unnecessary sources what is the last little bit you can do to save yourself some CPU power well if you go to your output settings you will see something called encoder preset Levon saying their higher equals.
Let’s see if you and it’ll range from ultra-fast down to slower essentially what this means is how much time the CPU spends on each frame as I get you seen those images of cartoonists spending a minute on a cartoon frame and then 10 seconds on a cartoon frame.
You can see the quality of difference between them the faster is going to look less but it’s easier on the computer because it doesn’t have to spend as much time on all the details so the faster you set your recorder preset the easier it’s going to be on your CPU.
But you will see some of that weird pixelation going on on your screen when you have a lot of movement at the time I found that if you said it any slower then faster.
There’s not really much of a difference I tried setting it on slowest it clocked my CPU percentage up to 80 percent and I saw no difference between that and faster I mean maybe like this much but that’s what we call diminishing returns it’s not worth it.
I usually run it faster I brought it down the fastest and it was a very minor change but it dropped my CPU percentage almost an effective test this whole thing before filming this I dropped my resolution down to 720 P.
Captain at 60 frames per second even kept the bit rate the same and drop the CPU preset down to a very fast or faster and my CPU usage went from about 32 percent down to 12 percent that’s almost down to a third of what the original processing power was actually left it at that.
I’m sick of my CPU going up to almost 40 percent at crazy times I wanted to stay down the fall on top of everything else if your computer is still struggling there’s 1 other thing you can do the very last thing I recommend you toy with is the in color.
I know a lot of you guys getting a game piece he really emphasizes the GPU you get a 1080 but you only get I find your computer if you change your encoder to hardware what it’s actually doing is taking a load off your CPU instead of including your stream with your CPU you’re gonna be including it with your GPU this might not work for a single PC stream.
Because that G. P. was running on Max for most of your gains especially if you’re running poorly optimized games like what G. but if you’re running a well-optimized game like Fortnite you might have some headroom to spare the GTX 10 seventies my streaming PC.
When I went to coding at 100 percent it only brought that jeep uses up to 25 percent that still gives you 75 percent of your GPU for your game let me give you what I think would be an optimal stream setting for someone who brands new to OBS.
This may be dropping some friends say your output resolution 720 P. or 1280 by 720 at 60 frames per second set your bit rate at 3000 set your encoder presets very fast maybe even. It’s super fast if you’re still struggling and consolidate your entire overlay instream elements.
So it’s all 1 way by lowering all those settings that I mentioned you will lower your CPU usage down to about 20 percent of what you had before that’s huge.
