Finding Website Ranked Keywords
Finding all the keywords on which your website is already ranking in different positions in the search result is a difficult thing. Google search console has its limitations, although it gives you an idea about the average position and a few other metrics such as impression, clicks, etc. But this is not enough.
Other free online tools like Ubersuggest are also limited, this is where the Semrush tool comes in very handy. To find the keywords your website is already ranking for:
Login to your Semrush account – if you still have not signed up then the good news is that they have a Semrush free trial. Put your domain name in the search bar and from the drop-down select “Organic Research”. It will display the different data on the dashboard.
Keywords: It is the total number of keywords your website is ranking in a specific country.
Traffic: Due to keyword ranking the amount of traffic your website is generating.
Traffic Cost: The cost of the keywords you have to pay for the keywords for ranking. If it is high then it means the keywords are valuable.
Branded Traffic: Traffic from the branded keywords.
Non-Branded Traffic: Traffic coming from the keywords that do not contain a brand name.
Just below this, there is a section named Top Organic Keywords. This is the section that shows the list of the keywords that are generating the most traffic on the website.
Spying on Competitor’s Keywords
If you are thinking this spying is illegal, Relax it is ethical. Competitor’s keywords analysis will give a defined path if you are still not sure where you need to head.
Use the Semrush tool to spy on your ranked keywords. To do this you need to follow the same steps as above to find the traffic as well as the most traffic-generating keywords. You can import that list of top-ranked keywords so that you can filter according to your need.
Keyword Gap Analysis
As the name suggests that it is the gap in the keywords between your competitors and your website.
To use the Keyword gap analysis feature of Semrush, put your domain name in the search box and click on the keyword gap. A total of five competitors can be added to check for the gap.
Choose the country and hit the compare button. After clicking the compare button you will be taken to the Keyword gap analysis dashboard. It shows different options as below image:
Shared: Total number of keywords that are common between you and your competitors.
Missing: Simply means the missing keywords that you are not ranking but your competitors are ranking.
Weak: List of your keywords ranking lower than your competitors.
Strong: List of your keywords ranking higher than your competitors.
Untapped: List of keywords that you are not ranking but one of your competitors is ranking.
All: List of all keywords on which all your competitors and you are ranking.
From the above one can focus on Missing, weak, and untapped.
Finding Your Primary Keywords
Time investment in SEO is very important, if any of the strategies fails then it will not only waste your effort but it also wastes your invested time. As the people say Time is money and this stands true in the SEO field.
Finding the right primary focus keyword is very crucial. During the keyword analysis, a few parameters need to consider such as its:
- Search Volume
- Difficulty
- Trend
Search volume of the keyword will show the average searches keywords are getting over a while. The difficulty score in the Semrush tools tells how difficult it will be to rank the keywords. If the difficulty is medium then with a decent effort you can rank for the keyword even if you are not a big brand or have high page authority.
Conclusion
Try not to find generic keywords for the SEO efforts if you are a newbie. The ranking of these generic keywords is taken by all the high authority websites, which is quite obvious.
One of the crucial parts of SEO strategy is finding the right set of targeted keywords for your mapped URLs. Before executing any other strategy make sure to spend a good amount of time on the Semrush SEO tool to finalise the right keywords.
