This program includes six major airlines in North America including Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. People eligible for these benefits are wheelchair users (even those who can transfer between seats), military veterans with service-related disabilities, adult companions of unaccompanied minors (who have no other family member or guardian traveling on Allegiant), senior citizens over age 75 or people with chronic respiratory ailments such as asthma or congestive heart failure.
The airline provides a boarding chair or wheelchair
The Air Carrier Access Act requires airlines to allow passengers with disabilities, including those who use wheelchairs, to board flights on their own and claim needed seating once on board. You are allowed one small bag that can be no larger than 12 x 17 x 10 and it must fit in a bin that is located under your seat or in an overhead compartment. How does it help passengers?
Allegiant Air offers 2 different levels of assistance to passengers who are unable to board a plane without help. Passengers requiring Basic Assist will receive up to $100 in reimbursement for using an Allegiant airlines approved vendor. Those who need Complete Assist will be provided with transportation and a wheelchair escort from their car or taxi into Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and onto their flight. This service is offered regardless of where you’re flying from, even if it’s not an Allegiant flights, as long as you have a confirmed ticket on Allegiant. However, you may only use Basic Assist once every 12 months for each type of travel (domestic/international), per reservation number; if you use Complete Assist, then that counts as your one yearly Basic Assist usage allowance.
Is it required for airlines to offer these options?
Yes, airlines are required by law to provide assistance for disabled passengers with special needs. When it comes to providing such assistance, each airline has different standards of what they will accept and offer as a special need. As a part of their special-needs travel policies, Allegiant states: A physical impairment or mental condition that substantially limits one or more major life activities of an individual may constitute a ‘special need.’ In addition, Allegiant Airlines considers whether its personnel can reasonably accommodate such an impairment without causing undue burden. This includes certain invisible disabilities (like diabetes), hearing impairments and speech impediments.
