What are these bars, and what are their uses? This article will explain the difference between this alloy and other titanium grades, and discuss the benefits of using them in your project. This alloy is also age-hardenable, making it ideal for parts that will undergo continuous exposure to heat and stress.
What are Ti 6Al-4V Round Bars?
The most common type of titanium alloy is Ti 6Al-4V. It is an annealed metal, commonly used in applications where service temperature does not exceed 400 degrees Celsius. This material can be heat treated for high strength in sections under four inches, although its hardenability is limited. Generally, Ti 6Al-4V is welded using ELI filler wire and matching wire. It is also annealed at 1950degF for 2 hours to provide strength and corrosion resistance.
They are available in hexagonal, square, and round shapes. These bars are commonly used for piston and valve shafts, pumps, cylinders, bearing bars, and more.
While Ti 6Al-4V is an excellent titanium alloy for general corrosion, it is susceptible to chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC). In marine environments, silver and copper-plated bolts will bond with chlorine. HNO3 and N2O4 can cause red fuming, though they are limited to environments with 1.5% water and six percent NO2. Despite its low sensitivity to chlorine, Ti 6Al-4V will resist attack by most chlorinated and fluorinated hydrocarbons.
Uses of Ti 6Al-4V Round Bars
The most widely used titanium alloy is Ti-6Al-4V. This alloy is composed of two phases of titanium, alpha, and beta. It is usually supplied in its annealed condition (BS2TA11 or AMS 4928R) but can undergo heat treatment for increased strength. In addition to its excellent corrosion resistance, Ti-6Al-4V offers low density and excellent mechanical properties.
Titanium alloys can be used in numerous applications, and 6AL-4V is among the most common. Its chemical composition contains ninety percent titanium and 6% aluminum, 4% vanadium, and 0.25% iron. These alloys are strong and lightweight, but can also be easily welded. Due to their great strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance, they are suitable for a variety of applications.
These materials are commonly used for engineering and construction projects and are available in a wide variety of grades. While grade 2 is the most common, there are many others available as well. Regardless of the application, if it requires titanium, our experts at Titanium Processing Center can provide you with a custom order of Ti 6Al-4V Round Bars.
